2012 was a horrible summer for grasshoppers!

I had seen migrations of grasshoppers through the years.

Had dealt with them eating my flowers and vegetables to where no leaves were left, no flowers, no produce at all.

But never had I seen the staying power of grasshoppers like the summer of 2012.

We were spending a couple of weeks at Josh & Dessie's place, enjoying the visit and loving on the grandkids.

Rick came in from outside early one morning after Josh had gone to work and said that he was going to town, would be back in a bit.

Not unusual.

A couple of hours later, he walked back in with a cheesy smile on his face.

Laid a package on our bed, then walked out to the front porch - his favorite place there.

A little while later I took him a glass of tea.

The grandkids had been in and out of the house, mostly out with P-Paw.

I walked out of the house, and as I stepped on the porch, I realized that Rick's chair was not where it usually was - just outside the door, against the wall of the house, next to the table for his drinks.

No, his chair was moved to the edge of the porch, where he would have to either push back from the railing, or twist his chair around, to get up. ?

I handed him his glass of tea.

And just about that time, one of our grandsons, CR - asked him, "P-paw, can I shoot now?" ?

I had heard no gunshots.

That's when I saw.

The reason Rick had gone to town was to buy a pellet gun.

One pellet at a time gun.

And now, he was sitting up close to the railing and shooting grasshoppers!

Oh, and he wasn't just shooting the grasshoppers, he had a pile of the dead ones on either side of his feet!

Each pile being several inches around and a couple of inches high.

I shook my head and asked him, "Honey, why do you have these piles of dead grasshoppers?"

He looked at me, giving me that "what a stupid question" look of his - -

and said, "That's a warning to the others!"

So, yes.

The rest of that visit was spent with Rick being Rick.

And with Josh, Shell, and CR joining in the craziness.
