The back porch was never just the back of the house.

It was where the dirty laundry got washed,

the muddy shoes got left,

 plants were repotted with dirt under your fingernails,

a baby calf that needed tended was wrapped in old quilts,

a momma dog having her puppies,

and a hundred other Life Living details handled. 

It was where you might sit and watch a thunderstorm rolling in from miles away

—or deal with an unruly child who needed a little straightening out.

And somehow, in the middle of all that tending and cleaning and living,

there was always room for a conversation.

Or just a-thinking.

The Back Porch of The Cottage is a little like that.

and find the things that don't quite belong in the front rooms.
