One late night I was called to the hospital with the words,

"Momma is dying. If you want to see her, you better get here - NOW!"

Rick and I rushed to the hospital.

I walked into the ER room where Momma was laying on the gurney.

The nurse that was standing at her side looked up and asked who I was.

"I am her baby girl."

At my words, Momma's pointer finger on her left hand raised and crooked for me to come to her.

Momma's oxygen level was extremely low.

Her blood pressure was lower than I had ever seen it.

Her breathing was shallow.

And she had a grey ashen look to her face.

Her eyes were closed.

I walked over to her, took her hand and she squeezed so hard that it made me catch my breath.

I took a deep breath, and using my "hard voice", I said,

"Momma, you wake up and look at me! Or I am going to turn you over and bust your ass!"

I took one breath and waited.

Momma opened her left eye, and said,

"You lay one hand on me, and I will come up off this table! I will hit you into the 2nd Tuesday of next week and be there to catch you before you fall!"

I just smiled.

Leaned over and kissed her forehead.

She closed her eye.

And as I watched the monitor, her blood pressure and oxygen began to rise.

The nurse gasped, and said,

"I'm glad she's doing better. But you should never talk to anyone like that, and especially your mother!"

Momma opened her right eye and said,

"Nobody talks to my baby like that! I will come up from here and hit you - but I won't catch you!"

There was nothing to do but laugh.

Oh Momma!!!

You were something else!
